The Hunting Art Prize, which is sponsored by the international oil services company Hunting PLC, is a prestigious annual competition open to established artists, talented newcomers, and promising amateurs. Its $50,000 award is the most generous annual art prize in the U.S. and has helped to build the reputations, raise the profiles, and support the careers of distinguished artists.
For those familiar with Sandi Seltzer Bryant’s painting,in an exciting and progressive shift away from the bright, vibrant palette she is so well known for, Ms. Bryant’s newest paintings are comprised of richer, subtler shades that challenged the artist, and reflect the most dramatic evolution of her work to date.
In addition to a change in palette, Ms. Bryant’s recent work incorporates a simplified range of shapes, primarily the straight line. Her previous series dealt with the abstraction of the Netherlands landscape, while this series is more removed from any identifiable subject matter. Also, more apparent than before, is the surface of the painting and layering. Other forms mix and mingle with the stripes, overlapping and weaving their way through the composition. The effect is both sophisticated and raw, simple and challenging.
Sandi Seltzer Bryant is an alum of Carnegie Mellon University where she received her B.F.A. in Painting. Her work has been exhibited throughout Texas and California, New York, London, Paris and numerous other venues around the United States. Ms. Bryant’s paintings can be found in countless public and private collections from Texas all the way to Seoul, Korea. She currently resides in Houston where she is well known and highly visible in the art community.
